    In the latest strong Sundance distribution deal, Lionsgate is nearing a $3 million acquisition of the Eli Roth-directed sexy thriller Knock Knock. There were eight offers, but this one’s close to closing. Roth wrote the script with Nicolas Lopez and Guillermo Amoedo. Reeves stars with Lorenza Izzo, Ana De Armas, Aaron Burns, Ignacia Allamand and Colleen Camp. Reeves plays a married man whose family is away. Two beautiful young girls fill the void and turn a wild fantasy into his worst nightmare. CAA and Cassian Elwes brokered the deal for a film that has been a hot buzz title since it premiered Friday in the Midnight section.

    In its limited release over the Christmas holiday weekend, “American Sniper” debuted to a stellar $240,212 from just four theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Dallas. The Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow film, which cost about $58 million to make, has now made about $3.3 million in the U.S. and Canada. The film could add a whopping $50 million over the four-day weekend, according to people who have seen pre-release audience surveys.

Born in Ottawa and raised in Montreal, Baruchel is all about working in Canada. The 32-year-old co-wrote and starred in his 2011 sports comedy Goon and made sure it was set and shot in Canada. He’s on record saying he wants to be part of a thriving Canadian film and television industry.

    Two short films produced by Langara Film Arts students have been selected for the Whistler Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival’s Short Cuts Canada program. “In its 10-year history, Langara College Film Arts has had four films selected for TIFF and five for Whistler,” department chair Garwin Sanford said Thursday in a news release. “This speaks to the quality of work being produced by our students.”
