Dennis Hopper: unreleased film to go on Kickstarter
Tuesday March 10th 2015Five years after the death of Dennis Hopper, the revered Hollywood actor and director, the production team that worked on his unreleased final film are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to complete the picture.
The crowdfunding platform, which was successfully used to fund Zach Braff’s comedy film Wish I Was Here in 2013, is being used to raise $90,000 in post-production costs, allowing director Linda Yellen to cut Hopper’s film, add special effects and pay for the rights to use footage from other motion pictures.
Filming on The Last Film Festival was stopped four years ago when Dennis Hopper unexpectedly died from cancer at the age of 74, just a few scenes short of completing work on the film.
Hopper, who starred in landmark films such as the countercultural classic Easy Rider (1969) and David Lynch’s surreal Blue Velvet (1986), gives a rare comedic performance in The Last Film Festival as big-shot Hollywood producer, Nick Twain, whose recent flop is accepted into a badly organised film festival.
Yellen explains: “May 2015 will mark the fifth anniversary of Hopper’s death, and we wanted to release the movie to coincide with this. We are reaching out to film fans over Kickstarter as other investment offers have come with a number of unwelcome demands, including cutting certain scenes, altering the film’s score, and even changing Dennis Hopper’s voice! Dennis saw a rough cut of the movie before he died and loved it.”
