Webby Awards 2016 Winners: Netflix, HBO, the Onion, Tyler Oakley, Michelle Obama Pick Up Awards

The creators of Netflix’s crime documentary series “Making a Murderer” and satire site the Onion were among a slew of award recipients for the 20th annual Webby Awards, announced Tuesday by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences

Other honorees include First Lady Michelle Obama, digital star Tyler Oakley, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, “Straight Outta Compton” and James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke,” and HBO Now (winner of best streaming-video app), along with special achievement award winners Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, Jessica Alba and the founders of #BlackLivesMatter.

Judges for the awards were Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Instagram’s Eva Chen, Questlove, Internet pioneer Vint Cerf and Susan P. Crawford. More than 2 million votes were cast from Internet fans for the Webby People’s Voice Awards.

The 20th annual Webby Awards ceremony will be available online at webbyawards.com the morning of Tuesday, May 17, featuring show highlights, including special performances and all the trademark “five-word speeches” from winners.

Here’s the list of Webby Special Achievement Awards:

Webby Lifetime Achievement: The Onion, which has won a record 39 Webby Awards in the humor category since the awards’ inaugural year in 1997

Webby Special Achievement: Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, creators of HBO’s “Girls,” will be honored for founding Lenny Letter, a weekly online feminist newsletter with nearly half a million subscribers

Webby Entrepreneur of the Year: Jessica Alba, founder of consumer goods vendor the Honest Company, the first recipient of the award
Social Movement of the Year: #BlackLivesMatter founders Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza will be recognized for the online civil-rights movement

Film & Video Breakout of the Year Award: “Making a Murderer” creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos

“Zoolander Returns to the Runway” won three Webbys, including best live experience in the branded entertainment category

Other winners included: Yahoo’s Tumblr for social website; Google Cardboard’s Cardboard Crash VR for best virtual reality in gaming, interactive or real-time; and Orchestra VR for best virtual reality: cinematic or prerecorded. Neymar Jr. won the People’s Voice award for best sports website and the Intercept won the People’s Voice award for best news website.

Winners of multiple Webby Awards include: Spotify (13), Vice Media (13); National Geographic (10); The New York Times (8); TED (7); Google (6); HBO (6); and the National Film Board of Canada (6).

Deloitte provides vote tabulation consulting for the Webby Awards.

This year, the Webby Awards received nearly 13,000 entries from all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide.
