Kiefer Sutherland stars in one of two ABC shows being filmed in Toronto

Heads-up, stargazers: You might be seeing Kiefer Sutherland walking around the streets of Toronto shortly.

ABC Studios has announced that two new primetime TV shows will be filmed in Toronto starting this month, which is good news for T.O.’s film and TV scene, since it’ll result in hundreds of local jobs and millions of dollars spent on local vendors.

“This announcement is a vote of confidence in the dynamic, competitive business environment we have created,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said in a statement. “These projects are strengthening Ontario’s economy, creating local jobs and reinforcing our reputation as a thriving production centre.”

Mayor John Tory also released a statement, saying that he’s excited to host the two high-profile productions in Toronto.

“We will do everything we can to make sure productions choose our city, and that our industry partners have the opportunity to create jobs, attract talent and contribute to the economy,” he said.

In the conspiracy thriller Designated Survivor, Sutherland stars as Tom Kirkman, a lower-level politician who becomes president after an epic attack in Washington, D.C.

The other new ABC series, Conviction, is a legal drama that stars Hayley Atwell and Shawn Ashmore.

ACTRA Toronto president David Sparrow recently talked to 24 Hours about the importance of filming A-list productions in Toronto.

“Showcasing Toronto is terrific for our city, our province and our country,” he said. “People don’t go to Paris to see the businessmen; they go to see the culture. And so by projecting our culture to the world, we’re projecting Toronto as an excellent place to come and do business and to visit.”
