TORONTO (CP) _ Heritage Minister Bev Oda promised more money Friday for Canada’s arts council, bringing the agency’s total funding to $180 million each year.
The Tories’ May 2006 budget pledged a two-year increase to funding for the Canada Council for the Arts, but until Friday’s announcement the extra money was not guaranteed to continue into the future.
The council, which distributes money to artists and organizations, will now receive $30 million more each year.
Oda made the announcement on the second-floor lobby of a downtown Toronto theatre.
Council director Robert Sirman says the funding pledge is good news for the country’s arts community.
