HBO sweeps primetime Emmys

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded its annual Emmy awards Sunday night, and Time Warner Inc.’s HBO channel rode the final season of "The Sopranos" to the largest trophy haul of the night.

HBO programs won a total of 21 primetime Emmys, including "Outstanding Drama Series," "Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series" and "Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series" for the organized crime and family drama. "Entourage" and "Extras" also won significant awards.

Reruns of "The Sopranos" air on A&E Television Networks, a joint venture shared by the privately-held Hearst Corp., The Walt Disney Co. and NBC Universal, a unit of General Electric Co.

NBC programs, including "Outstanding Comedy Series"-winner "30 Rock," claimed 19 of the awards.

ABC, a Disney unit, and CBS Corp. each garnered 10 statues. ABC’s honored shows included "Ugly Betty" and "Brothers & Sisters," while CBS took home awards for shows including "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men."

The Public Broadcasting Service was given nine Emmys, while the Fox network, which hosted the Emmy broadcast, received seven.
