MTV honors ‘Transformers’

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) — “Transformers” is the winner of best movie at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards.

Last summer’s robots-in-disguise blockbuster took the top honor Sunday night. Megan Fox helped accept the award.

The ceremony was held at the Gibson Amphitheatre, only a couple of hundred yards uphill from the disastrous fire that ripped through the adjacent Universal Studios lot earlier in the day in Universal City, Calif.

Online voters chose winners for categories such as best kiss, best villain and best summer movie so far. Johnny Depp won twice, and got the biggest ovations of the night while shyly accepting best comedic performance and best villain awards.

Tom Cruise presented Adam Sandler with the Generation Award, the show’s highest honor.

There was smoke — but no mention of fire — at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday night.

Presenters Seth Rogan and James Franco, stars of the upcoming stoner comedy “Pineapple Express,” pretended to smoke marijuana — were they really pretending? — before presenting the new category of best summer movie so far. But there was no mention of a disastrous fire that ripped through the adjacent Universal Studios lot earlier in the day.

“Kids, don’t really smoke fake weed like this,” Rogan told the crowd at the Gibson Amphitheatre, with a degree of sarcasm to suggest that the only fake thing was the idea that it was fake.

As they pulled out the “contraband,” the cameras pulled away to a wide angle, staying that way until Rogan and Franco had lit up their “fake fatty joint” and left the stage. The awkward moment made some in the audience laugh, but left Robert Downey Jr. — who accepted the award on behalf of “Iron Man” — with a puzzled look.

The MTV Movie Awards format allowed viewers to vote online for categories such as best kiss and best villain. Presenters were threatened to keep their speeches short by a man resembling Javier Bardem’s character from “No Country for Old Men” — complete with the bob hairdo and pneumatic cattle gun.

Best female performance winner Ellen Paige from “Juno” escaped unscathed, but best fight winners Sean Faris and Cam Gigandet were ushered off stage by the menacing lookalike.

Host Mike Myers kicked off the live ceremony with a dance-off with singer Chris Brown. Toward the middle of the show, he was joined by Dana Carvey for a reprisal of their early ’90s TV and movie characters Wayne and Garth of “Wayne’s World.”

Best comedic performance went to Johnny Depp, who got the biggest screams of the night took the stage to accept it.

“I’m not a very funny person,” the “Sweeney Todd” star said.

“That’s very sweet.”

During the ceremony, Adam Sandler received the Generation Award, the show’s highest honor. After an introduction by Tom Cruise, Sandler took the stage to perform “Nobody Does it Better,” including a guitar solo on his gold Gibson Les Paul.

Earlier, Coldplay performed its new single, and the Pussycat Dolls were also scheduled to perform.

Nominees for best movie included “Juno,” “Transformers,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” “I Am Legend,” “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” and “Superbad,” which led the pack this year with five nominations.

Smoke from the Universal Studios fire, which broke out early Sunday and damaged several sets only a couple of hundred yards downhill from the awards show venue, was still visible from backstage.

A new town means new beauty, new drama, and new faces. Meet the cast of “Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County”:

Chrissy

Chrissy has recently blossomed into a head-turning high school senior and with three top colleges to pick from, she is clearly the smartest girl in the group. Will this good girl have the nerve to go after the cutest guy in school, even if it means a head-on collision with her dad?

Allie

Allie is the girl that all the boys want and all the girls want to be. With three months left before graduation, Allie wants to shed her image as “the boyfriend-stealing bad girl.” To make things worse, she finds herself caught between her ex-boyfriend, her flirtatious best friend, and Chrissy’s new love interest. Will she go after Chrissy’s crush and risk their new friendship?

Clay

Clay could have his pick of any girl in the school, but being a shy junior, he often turns to his gregarious best friend Grant for confidence. Will Clay get the nerve to ask out the most sought after girl in school or will he end up going for the cute girl next door?

Grant

While only a junior, Grant is the life of the party. Whether it’s his luck with the ladies, his money supply or throwing the best parties he is the epicenter for entertainment. After spending a summer at military school, his parents are tying to lay down the law. Will Grant be able to change his bad-boy behavior?

Chase

No matter how many hearts Chase breaks, he still has a way with the girls. Even though he is dating Taylor, this senior is openly pursuing a reunion with his former flame. Although he is sometimes viewed as being over-confident, his persona masks a family life in turmoil after a bitter divorce between his parents. Will Chase put aside his player ways and stick with one girl?

Taylor

Only a sophomore, Taylor is the youngest of the group. She has been dating Chase, but finds herself competing with one of the older girls for her boyfriend’s affections. Can she tame Chase into an honest relationship or will she finally get fed up and leave him?

Mario’s First Starring Role Alongside Hilary Swank in ‘Freedom Writers’

NEW YORK, Jan. 3 – R&B sensation Mario steps into his first starring film role in Freedom Writers, the real-life story of teenagers in gang warfare-plagued Los Angeles whose lives are changed through writing. Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank stars as the inspirational teacher who reaches Mario’s troubled teen Andre and his classmates. The Paramount Pictures/MTV Films movie premieres January 4, 2007 in Los Angeles and opens January 5, 2007.

Mario’s first serious film role is one that is close to his heart. His character’s struggle to deal with an incarcerated brother and drug-addicted mother struck a chord with Mario, who dealt with his own mother’s drug use for much of his childhood.

"I came from the same mentality as my character in Freedom Writers," Mario explains of his approach to the role of Andre. "Thankfully, like Andre, I was given an opportunity for change and I recognized that. This movie really shows people that regardless of your situation, you have the right to free yourself."

While his character Andre finds an outlet for his frustrations in writing, music is what inspired Mario, who became a star at the young age of 15 when he released his debut album, 2002’s Mario. His platinum follow-up Turning Point spawned a #1 single "Let Me Love You" and launched Mario from teen sensation to bona fide R&B star. Now 20 and with his first serious film role under his belt, Mario is prepping his third album, Go!, due out in March 2007. The album will feature songs produced by Pharrell Williams, Akon, Polow Da Don, Scott Storch, and more.
