TORONTO, Controversial Canadian documentary film, Cracked Not Broken, has been acquired for broadcast by US premium network HBO and is scheduled to be the network’s featured film on Saturday March 17, 2007. This broadcast coincides with a free HBO weekend for cable subscribers across the United States. The film is one of four independent films chosen to be part of HBO’s major ADDICTION project launching March 16, 2007.
Cracked Not Broken, by filmmaker Paul Perrier and executive producer Tom Powers, is a co-production of Open Door and Blatant Exposure. This real-time documentary opens a disturbing window into the life of Lisa, a 37-year-old crack cocaine addict and estranged mother who prostitutes herself to fuel her costly drug habit. Although she grew up in an upper class family in Rosedale, a privileged Toronto neighbourhood, went to the right private schools, had the right friends, something went terribly wrong.
Shot almost entirely in her Toronto hotel room, the film brilliantly captures a highly intelligent, vivacious, articulate and hyperactive woman juggling a cell phone and drug paraphernalia with equal dexterity while talking with incredible frankness to Perrier about the struggles of being ‘in the game’ and her quest for any kind of redemption. The film and its subject gained international prominence after being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show in May of last year.

The film has been screened to more than 10,000 students and parents at high schools to rave reviews. It had its sold out US premier at the prestigious San Francisco Documentary Festival May 14, 2006. In addition to its HBO sale, Open Door has sold the film for broadcast in the UK and Israel and is actively pursuing other broadcast deals through its distributor Tricon Films outside of North America.
Perrier and Powers have teamed up again to produce the follow-up film to Cracked Not Broken entitled Cracked Wide Open. It follows Lisa for a one year period as she tries to use the film to pull herself out of her addiction and redeem her life. From the first screening of the film to an audience of family and friends, to high school screenings, to The Oprah Winfrey Show and through a recovery period in a private rehab in California, Cracked Wide Open captures the amazing parallel journeys of an addict and a ground breaking film.
