Woody Allen’s new film to screen at TIFF

TORONTO (CP) _ Woody Allen’s new movie "Cassandra’s Dream" will screen at next month’s Toronto International Film Festival.

Shot in London, the film stars Ewan McGregor and Colin Farrell as two brothers looking to improve their troubled lives.

Meanwhile "Across The Universe," the latest film from Julie Taymor, who directed "Frida", will also be shown at a festival gala.

Featuring a performance by U2 frontman Bono, the film tells the story of two star-crossed lovers during the 1960s and features classic songs including "Hey Jude," "I Am the Walrus," and "All You Need is Love."

It also stars Eddie Izzard, who has made a splash on TV this year on "The Riches."

Star filled docs at TIFF

TORONTO (CP) _ Liev Schreiber, Don Cheadle, Woody Allen, Donald Sutherland, Michael Douglas, Joan Allen and Liam Neeson are among the actors lending their star power to documentaries at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

The lineup of non-fiction cinema titles announced Tuesday include Ted Braun’s "Darfur Now," an American piece featuring Cheadle and five other individuals trying to generate awareness about the genocide in the region of western Sudan.

Allen, meanwhile, can be seen interacting with composer Philip Glass and other musical luminaries in the Australian piece "Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts," by distinguished filmmaker Scott Hicks ("Shine").

In Nina Davenport’s U.S. offering "Operation Filmmaker," Schreiber invites a young Iraqi film student _ destitute after the bombing of Baghdad’s film school _ to intern on the production of the film "Everything is Illuminated."

"Trumbo," a U.S.-made doc from Peter Askin, is a portrait of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who fought back after being blacklisted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. It’s told through spoken-word performances and includes appearances by Sutherland, Douglas, Neeson and Joan Allen.

Eminent filmmakers Werner Herzog and Kevin Macdonald are also unspooling their latest projects at the festival, which runs Sept. 6 to 15.

Herzog’s piece "Encounters at the End of the World," about his trip to Antarctica, marks his triumphant return to the big screen since his acclaimed documentary "Grizzly Man."

Macdonald, director of the Oscar-winning "The Last King of Scotland," will screen "My Enemy’s Enemy," about the post-war activities of one-time Gestapo commander Klaus Barbie, infamously known as the "Butcher of Lyon."

Twenty documentaries in total were announced for the festival Tuesday, as well as several other film titles, including Gus Van Sant’s"Paranoid Park," about a troubled teenage skateboarder.

Actor Gael Garcia Bernal, who made a splash at last year’s film festival in the Brad Pitt gem "Babel," will return again this year for his directorial debut, "Deficit."

A Summer of Cinematheque Classics: 50 Years of Janus Films

Call it Film 101, The Canon, the Golden Age of the Art Film, or The Essentials of World Cinema, this almost impossibly rich selection of classics by everyone from Renoir, Tati, and Bresson to Kurosawa, Ozu, and Mizoguchi includes many of the greatest films ever made, most of them presented in newly struck prints. The occasion for this cinephilic grande bouffe? The fiftieth anniversary of Janus Films, the independent distributor which for five decades has shaped film culture in North America by releasing nothing but the best from film history. None of the film critics, curators, academics, and historians on this continent could have properly done his or her job without Janus, nor the many directors whose love of cinema was nurtured by the classics in Janus’s burgeoning library. The company’s modest but memorable logo was fashioned from the image of the two-faced Janus, entirely appropriate for an enterprise that influenced the future of film by enlisting its glorious past. This venture continues with their Criterion Collection, which sets the highest standards for DVD production. For information: cinemathequeontario.ca .

The Film Reference Library has reference viewing copies and information about these classics available for study purposes, call 416 967-1517 to make an appointment.

TIFF Closing Night Gala "Emotional Arithmetic"

Toronto, Following a highly successful Canadian press conference on Tuesday, the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival announces Paolo Barzman’s EMOTIONAL ARITHMETIC as a Closing Night Gala Presentation. Based on Matt Cohen’s eponymous novel and adapted for the screen by Jefferson Lewis and Barzman, EMOTIONAL ARITHMETIC is a story of redemption, healing and reconciliation ignited by the reunion of three Holocaust survivors.

The film stars Susan Sarandon, Christopher Plummer, Gabriel Byrne, Roy Dupuis, and Max von Sydow. Ticket Passes and Packages now on sale. Gala tickets on sale August 25.

"We’re absolutely delighted to have EMOTIONAL ARITHMETIC close this year’s Festival," said Noah Cowan, Festival Co-Director. "We are proud that the Festival now opens and closes with vibrant and high profile Canadian films. The inclusion of this powerful film reflects the robust nature of our industry."

Set in 1985, EMOTIONAL ARITHMETIC tells the story of three friends who reunite 40 years after the end of the Second World War. Having formed a lifelong bond in the internment camp in Drancy, France they come together for a celebratory dinner that reveals how their memories of the past still unsettle their present day lives.

As children, Melanie and Christopher were protected by Jakob, a political dissident in the camp who they believed had been sent to his death in Auschwitz. As adults they learned that Jakob survived the camp to become a successful poet. Melanie (Sarandon) returned to North America and now tries to live a quiet life with her husband, David (Plummer) and son Benjamin (Dupuis). Instead she balances a precarious emotional state with her sharp wit, while battling bouts of depression. When she discovers that Jakob (von Sydow) is alive, she invites him to Canada to live with her family.

Unbeknownst to her, Christopher (Byrne) meets Jakob along the way and decides to travel with him. Suppressing his undeclared love for Melanie, Christopher arrives at her doorstep at Jakob’s side, and the pair unravel Melanie’s remaining threads of control. As the evening’s celebratory dinner approaches, memories reshape themselves, feelings emerge and collide and the past and present intertwine in enigmatic and explosive equations.

Directed by Paolo Barzman, EMOTIONAL ARITHMETIC is produced by Suzanne Girard of BBR Productions and Anna Stratton of Triptych Media. The film will be distributed by Seville Pictures Inc. in Canada.
