  • Christal Films gets bankruptcy protection

    Christal Films Distribution, a movie releasing partnership between Montreal’s Christal Films, Lionsgate and Maple Pictures, has secured bankruptcy protection under Canada’s Creditors Arrangement Act. Christal Films Distribution said it received creditor protection from the Quebec Superior Court, which gave the distributor 30 days to restructure its affairs. The move follows Toronto-based Maple Pictures ending its distribution pact with Christian Larouche, the veteran Quebec producer who runs Montreal-based Christal Films Production.

    The Canadians have wrapped their dealmaking at the Los Angeles Screenings, marking what is likely the fastest-closing window for this voracious consumer of U.S. TV programs. The Screenings began Friday. With only 18 completed pilots to view as they toured studio lots, the Canadians didn’t need much time to sign off. They were making decisions on full pilots only. Usually, they take a week to wrap.

  • ‘Indy’ raises sun on dark Cannes fest

    The myriad makeshift signs people waved outside the Palais Sunday said it all: “Me, Indi Jones tickets, please” as hundreds of fans and moviegoers started amassing in hopes of securing passage to the world premiere of the fourth installment of the Steven Spielberg franchise. And if not to the movie, then at least a glimpse of Spielberg, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf and practically the entire (human) cast as they made their way to the chock-a-block press conference after the screening.
