  • Business booming for Canada’s TV operators

    Canada’s cable and satellite TV operators experienced robust revenue and profit growth in 2007, Canada’s TV watchdog said Wednesday. The CRTC reported that cable revenue rose 16.1% between 2006 and ’07 to a record $7.1 billion, while revenue for wireless cable and satellite TV distributors jumped 11.4% year-to-year to $1.85 billion.

    The all-Canadian WWI drama “Passchendaele” will open the 33rd Toronto Film Festival. Written, directed and produced by veteran Canadian actor Paul Gross, the film is inspired by the experiences of Gross’ grandfather, who served in the 10th Battalion, CEF, at the 1917 battle of Passchendaele. The film is a Rhombus Media, Whizbang Films and Damberger Film and Cattle Co. production. It cost C$20 million and was shot mostly in Alberta.

    The Ontario Media Development Corporation announced the establishment of the OMDC Screen-based Content Initiative, a $2 million program that will provide Ontario screen-based content creation companies – including film and television producers – with funding for early-stage development activities required to bring projects closer to production and to help attract financing

    Stan Winston, the Oscar-winning special effects, creature and makeup artist whose innovative creations include the full-scale animatronic dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park” and the futuristic Terminators, has died. He was 62. Winston died Sunday at his home in Malibu after a seven-year battle with myeloma, a Stan Winston Studio spokeswoman said.[…]
