    Records toppled at the 60th annual Primetime Emmys Sunday as period pieces “Mad Men” and “John Adams” made history and a pair of series extended dominance within their categories to an unprecedented six consecutive years. Already a ground-breaker thanks merely to its nomination, “Mad Men” became the first basic cable series ever — and for that matter, non-HBO cable series — named best drama or comedy.

  • Canadian filmmakers hit their target with indie western

    They may not be the Coen Bros. or even the Weinsteins — yet — but the way two Canadian brothers, Matt and Jeff Campagna, turned their idea for a new age Western into a movie would do any indie filmmaker proud. Only one month ago, the Campagnas saw their $12,000 film, “Six Reasons Why” released in Canadian theaters and on DVD, but that came about after three years of hard work, a chance encounter with actor Colm Feore and finding a distributor by crashing parties at TIFF.

    Canadian director Norman Jewison’s prized mementoes, including the screenplay for “The Statement,” production photos from “Fiddler on the Roof” and wardrobe notes from “Moonstruck,” are on display at his alma mater, the University of Toronto. The exhibition is part of a permanent Norman Jewison archive being established at the university.
