    Global TV’s Toronto station is eliminating its noon newscast, resulting in an unspecified number of layoffs, Canwest Global Communications Corp. said Tuesday. Canwest spokesman John Douglas said fewer than 40 employees will be affected, but declined to give a specific number. They follow cutbacks at many of Canada’s major media operations, including 105 layoffs at broadcaster CTV and 600 at Quebecor-owned Sun Media, Canada’s largest newspaper publisher.

  • CNN rolls with punches for inauguration

    To cover a historic event like the inauguration of a president, you need the right people in the right place at the right time, a copy of the Constitution and, in CNN’s case, the help of a “big-ass” camera. Fifty pool cameras were taking in everything at the Capitol, along with 46 high-definition cameras that CNN had set up on their own, as well as feeds from all over the country as the nation tunes in to watch Obama’s inauguration.

    For television producers and correspondents covering the inauguration, today will be one for the history books. Like everything surrounding the 2008 presidential campaign, the inauguration of Barack Obama dawns with broadcast media swinging for the fences. Not only are the usual suspects bringing their A teams, but cable networks as diverse as BET, TV One, Al Jazeera and ESPN are offering live coverage of Obama’s swearing-in. MTV will focus on inaugural coverage in the evening.
