  • Academy tweaks Emmy rules

    Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert won’t be losing to Tony Bennett and Barry Manilow at the Emmys again. The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has tweaked its rules in several categories, including splitting the Individual performance in a variety or music program field into two: one for hosts of comedy/variety/music series and one for performers in such specials. The rule change reverts the nominations setup to the way it was before the two categories were combined in one category in 1997, resulting in some awkward face-offs.

    Tom Hanks has gotten involved in SAG’s stalled contract negotiations, joining George Clooney in informal approaches on behalf of the Screen Actors Guild. The moves by the stars over the past week are aimed at nudging the guild and the congloms off their stalemate over the issue of when the SAG’s master feature-primetime contract would expire. SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers had no comment late Wednsday about the talks.

    Geneva Film Co., an innovative Toronto company specializing in Live Action Digital 3D, has produced the world’s first 3D public service announcement. The spot was commissioned by the Tema Conter Memorial Trust — a national charity that helps emergency services personnel understand and cope with the effects of Acute and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Shot on location in Toronto, Ontario, the PSA was filmed using a leading edge duel camera system supplied by Toronto’s 3D Camera Company. The rig mounts together two Arri cameras to record film images for the left and right eyes to create the immersive 3D effect.
