    Canadian bankers and U.S. bondholders on Wednesday agreed to pump new capital into debt-laden Canwest Global Communications Corp. to stave off bankruptcy protection. The recapitalization means the way is clear for the Canadian broadcaster to shop for new and returning U.S. series beginning Thursday at the Los Angeles Screenings.

    Arriving a week earlier than usual, Canadian broadcasters are already hunkered down at studio backlots across town as the L.A. Screenings are unofficially under way. Buyers for CTV and Rogers were in Los Angeles on Wednesday to scope out what could possibly be their next batch of primetime hits. CanWest Global will be there today.

    They came expecting a bomb. What they’re getting, with possible deals still on the table, is not as bad as that. Expectations were so low ahead of the 2009 Festival de Cannes that even modest successes seemed like home runs, while disappointments were barely felt. From the prebuy market to Palais screenings, from finished-film acquisitions to the Croisette party scene, the mood has been subdued but not silent.
