    There are a couple dozen productions that will be shooting in the city over the next few weeks. For the average Torontonian production enthusiast, trying to keep track of all these things can be a daunting task. Luckily, TO411 has an ear to the ground and can fill you in on a few productions you ought to know a little more about. As for features, Resident Evil: Afterlife began shooting last week and will reportedly be released in 2010. The film, starring Milla Jovovich, will be the fourth title of the R.E. franchise to shoot in the city. CTV has started shooting the first season of their newest comedic endeavour, Dan for Mayor. Battle of the Blades is currently shooting over at the city’s foremost hockey temple, Maple Leaf Gardens . . .

How he deals with the situation at hand in the nights ahead, could prove to be a defining chapter in his long TV career. With any luck, it could clinch his recent ratings victory in late-night TV. The intensely private Letterman surely didn’t want to be swept up in this maelstrom, which he dropped on “Late Show” viewers last Thursday with his startling revelations of having sex with women on his staff – a disclosure prompted by an alleged $2 million blackmail threat against him.

    Business got off to a heady start on the first day of MIPCOM on Monday as buyers and sellers thronged to the balconies and terraces to take advantage of unseasonably warm weather. There were, however, noticeably fewer attendees and areas in the far reaches of the Palais des Festivals where booth space remained unsold. “There are tough markets around the world, but those are the places where we are trying to work things out,” said Ben Pyne, president of global distribution at Disney-ABC Worldwide Television. “We’re developing relationships that go to a different level, and it’s all about problem-solving.

    Weak local currencies and the slow road to recovery were on the minds of buyers and sellers heading to the Riviera-side market MIPCOM. Despite the tough economic realities, the mood is tipped towards optimism as the TV industry is looking to sell audiences on what it knows best: entertainment. With a raft of exclusive performances, cocktails and parties, there is a sense that glitz and glamour is back on the Croisette, albeit as part of a pretty tough-sell as distributors go all-out to woo buyers to new shows.
