    Execs from the Canuck TV networks will be descending on Los Angeles in the next couple of days for the annual L.A. Screenings TV mart, which kicks off on Tuesday. Unlike buyers who browse and make deals after the event, the Canadians do their buying on the spot — but they’re not planning the usual spending spree. The programming bosses from CTV, Global and City-TV all say they are going to be much more prudent than usual during the 10-day event.

    The 2010 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival ended with a weekend full of awards presentations to the top films and film makers this year. Many of these awards come with cash prizes that help both seasoned and emerging filmmakers continue to create the work that moves us. Among the films honoured this year were two unique films that were in the top ten audience favourites at the festival: Waste Land and Leave Them Laughing. The latter also won the Special Jury prize for Canadian Feature.

  • Cannes jury takes expansive approach

    Forget “judgment,” this year’s watchword for the Festival de Cannes jury is “generosity.” Jury president Tim Burton told the global press he hopes to recapture the element of surprise he first felt as a child watching movies, adding that he has no desire to follow 2008 jury president Sean Penn’s stated aim of turning his jury members’ heads toward political works. “We want to view every film and discuss how they touch us both intellectually and emotionally, and bring our generosity as filmmakers and those in the world of film to it,” Burton said.
