Gone are the days when CBC Television awkwardly trotted out its talent on stage as a means of introducing new and returning shows to the fall schedule. This year, the network’s on-air personalities were merely introduced by a spotlight as they stood inconspicuously at the back of the room, watching as a local band, the Midways, kicked off the 2011-2012 prime-time fall show.
Goodness gracious, was I ever relieved to write this week’s Brief. And why, you might ask? Because thanks to a recent article in the inestimable New York Times, people over 50 (like me!) can emerge from the premature grave marketers have dumped us in, and reclaim our right to be a consumer-viable demographic again.
Walt Disney Studio is going into staff-cutting mode and is expected to eliminate between 200 and 250 positions next week. The layoffs will amount to less than 5% of the company’s total workforce, about 5,000 employees worldwide. The majority of the cuts will be in the areas of distribution, although marketing and production could be affected as well.
Deluxe continued its acquisition spree Wednesday, acquiring 3D conversion company StereoD. But the venerable lab and post giant may have acquired some headaches along with its new prize.
