Shareholder Class Action Filed Against IMAX Corporation

RADNOR, Pa., Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ — The following statement was issued today by the law firm of Schiffrin & Barroway, LLP:

Notice is hereby given that a class action lawsuit was filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on behalf of all common stock purchasers of IMAX Corporation (NASDAQ:IMAX) ("IMAX" or the "Company") from February 17, 2006 through August 9, 2006, inclusive (the "Class Period").

The Complaint charges IMAX and certain of its officers and directors with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. More specifically, the Complaint alleges that the Company failed to disclose and misrepresented the following material adverse facts which were known to defendants or recklessly disregarded by them: (1) that defendants improperly timed revenue recognition from theatres; (2) specifically, that the Company recognized revenue in the fourth quarter of 2005 from at least ten theatres before the theatres had opened; (3) that the Company sought to manipulate its financial results because it desired to attract entities interested in buying or merging with the Company; (4) that the Company’s financial statements were materially inflated; (5) that the Company lacked adequate internal controls; and (6) that the Company’s financial statements were presented in violation of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

On August 9, 2006, after the market closed, IMAX shocked investors when the Company announced that it was in the process of responding to an informal inquiry from the SEC regarding the Company’s timing of revenue recognition, including its application of multiple element arrangement accounting in its revenue recognition for theatre systems. On this news, shares of IMAX plummeted $3.90, or 40.5 percent, to close, on August 10, 2006, at $5.73 per share, on unusually heavy trading volume.

Plaintiff seeks to recover damages on behalf of class members and is represented by the law firm of Schiffrin & Barroway, which prosecutes class actions in both state and federal courts throughout the country.

If you are a member of the class described above, you may, not later than October 10, 2006, move the Court to serve as lead plaintiff of the class, if you so choose. A lead plaintiff is a representative party that acts on behalf of other class members in directing the litigation.

In order to be appointed lead plaintiff, the Court must determine that the class member’s claim is typical of the claims of other class members, and that the class member will adequately represent the class. Under certain circumstances, one or more class members may together serve as "lead plaintiff." Your ability to share in any recovery is not, however, affected by the decision whether or not to serve as a lead plaintiff. You may retain Schiffrin & Barroway, or other counsel of your choice, to serve as your counsel in this action.

If you wish to discuss this action or have any questions concerning this notice or your rights or interests with respect to these matters, please contact Schiffrin & Barroway, LLP (Darren J. Check, Esq. or Richard A. Maniskas, Esq.) toll-free at 1-888-299-7706 or 1-610-667-7706, or via e-mail at info@sbclasslaw.com.

Johnny Depp Set for ‘Sweeney Todd’

LOS ANGELES /PRNewswire/ — DreamWorks Studios announced today that Johnny Depp has been set to star and Tim Burton to direct "Sweeney Todd," the award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical thriller.

The co-production with Warner Bros. will star Johnny Depp as the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Depp is currently starring in the record-breaking blockbuster, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest."

"Sweeney Todd" marks the 6th collaboration between the actor and director. The previous Burton-Depp films have been "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Corpse Bride," "Ed Wood," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sleepy Hollow."

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the screenplay adaptation which was written by Logan. Production is planned to begin early next year for a late 2007 release. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.

The Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd," with Sondheim’s music and lyrics and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond, opened in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its mix of the comic, the dramatic and the macabre held together by Sondheim’s movie-like score has had hundreds of productions throughout the world. A highly acclaimed revival is now playing in New York.

The story of "Sweeney Todd" is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. The plot is foreshadowed in the first lines of the opening number: "Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd./His skin was pale and his eye was odd./He shaved the faces of gentlemen/Who never thereafter were heard of again."

Sondheim is known in the theater for the lyrics to "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," the music and lyrics for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Company," "Follies," "A Little Night Music" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Sunday in the Park With George," among others, as well as the film scores of "Stavisky" and "Reds" (the latter co-written with Dave Grusin) and the Academy Award®-winning Best Original Song "Sooner or Later" from the Warren Beatty movie "Dick Tracy."

Former DreamWorks co-heads Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald have produced or executive produced a wide range of critically and commercially successful films, including the Oscar-winning "Gladiator," the "Men In Black" and "Ring" series, as well as "Catch Me If You Can," "Minority Report," and "The Terminal," the latter all directed by Steven Spielberg.

"Sweeney Todd" will mark Richard Zanuck’s third collaboration with DreamWorks, having produced "Deep Impact" and "Road to Perdition" for the studio. The film will also mark Zanuck’s reunion with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with whom he produced last year’s international hit "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Among his many films, Zanuck won a Best Picture Oscar as a producer for "Driving Miss Daisy" and has received the Academy’s Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for consistently producing high quality motion pictures.

Tim Burton is also developing the Paramount production of "Ripley’s Believe It Or Not."

Producer/Writer John Logan’s most recent screenplays were "The Aviator" and "The Last Samurai," and he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on DreamWorks’ "Gladiator."

CBC puts plans for Canadian version of The One on hold

TORONTO (CP) _ A Canadian version of The One will not air any time soon, the CBC said Tuesday, roughly two weeks after a U.S. version of the televised singing contest proved to be a flop south of the border.

CBC spokesman Jeff Keay said the reality show is "still in development" but not on the broadcast schedule this year.

"We can confirm that it’s not going to be fall of 2006," Keay said Tuesday.

"We’re going to be looking a little bit further out than we may have been before."

A Canadian version of The One: Making a Music Star had originally been planned to air in late 2006 or in 2007, and was expected to follow a U.S. version that aired on ABC and was simulcast on CBC-TV.

But the U.S. series was abruptly cancelled July 28 _ less than two weeks after its debut.

At the time, Canadian critics were quick to seize on the cancellation as proof of poor decision-making at the CBC, which bumped its flagship news program The National to accommodate the simulcast and build a future audience for a homegrown version.

Keay said the show’s failure in the U.S. has the CBC reconsidering all aspects of a Canadian version.

"We want to take a careful look at it," said Keay.
