In 2007, the Tribeca Film Festival underwent a modern-day rite of passage: the backlash. Co-founded by Robert De Niro after Sept. 11 to help heal his Manhattan neighborhood, the festival had previously enjoyed a thankful reception. But as it expanded further into New York and the number of screenings quintupled, some began to resent Tribeca’s growth into the already crowded festival circuit. “You can’t please everybody,” De Niro said in a recent interview. The seventh annual festival opens Wednesday night.
HBO might have a biker-sized legal problem on its hands with its motorcycle-themed drama pilot “1%.” Hells Angels founder Sonny Barger filed a lawsuit last week against the pay cable network, the production company behind the project and its writer/executive producer Michael Tolkin claiming that the concept and the script for the show were developed with his collaboration.
Sumner Redstone’s Viacom Inc will launch a premium TV and movie channel with Lionsgate and MGM, aiming a direct volley at Time Warner’s HBO as well as Redstone’s own Showtime networks owned by CBS Corp. The new channel will have originally produced television series, as well as feature upcoming movies and classic hits. It is expected to launch in autumn 2009, the companies said in a statement on Sunday.
