    Bullish Canadians headed to this year’s Banff World Television Festival are hoping U.S. buyers are ready to open their wallets for more homegrown TV series. With NBC having purchased the Canadian drama “The Listener” and CBS acquiring “Flashpoint” during the recent WGA strike, local producers anticipate a full-court press in Banff to get more homegrown series into the U.S. market. Toronto-based producer Portfolio Entertainment said that it intends to acquire about 400 hours of product in Banff for its distribution pipeline.

    After the massive fire at Universal Studios Hollywood, Los Angeles County officials are studying whether building codes for movie sets, sound stages and production facilities should be strengthened. “While being mindful of the importance of the entertainment industry to the region’s economy, this is a prudent time to take stock of existing building regulations,” Yaroslavsky said.

    Fox’s new “Fringe” hopes to benefit from Remote Free TV. Fox is getting 35%-40% pricing premiums for commercials in its two new dramas for the 2008-09 season, “Fringe” and “Dollhouse,” in upfront deals with advertisers, according to media agency sources. Under its Remote Free TV plan, the network is running only half the number of commercials and promotional minutes in those shows in order to try to maximize viewer engagement.
