    Epitome Pictures’ teen drama “Degrassi: The Next Generation” has earned top marks at the second of three galas celebrating the Geminis, Canada’s TV awards. Tuesday’s gala handed out 21 prizes in the lifestyle and youth TV categories at Toronto’s Liberty Grand complex. “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” which airs on CTV in Canada and the N in the U.S., won best children’s or youth fiction program or series.

  • Federal mediator contacts AMPTP

    The Federal Mediation & Conciliation Service formally contacted the AMPTP at the request of SAG to sit down and try to hash out the unsettled TV/theatrical contract. A source close to the producers said federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez — the very same one chosen last year to mediate talks between the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers and WGA prior to the writers strike — contacted the studios negotiating arm Monday afternoon.

    “Confessions of an Innocent Man,” a documentary about a Canadian man wrongly jailed and sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia, drew top honors Monday night as it was named best biographical documentary at the Geminis. The Paperny Films doc about William Sampson’s harrowing imprisonment triumphed as the Canadian broadcast industry handed out awards for documentary, news and sports programming on the first of three nights of awards-giving in Toronto.
