Nine compete for Venice 3-D prize
Monday August 10th 2009The 66th Venice Film Festival has announced the nine films in contention for the event’s first 3-D prize and all are from the U.S.
Two of the pictures appear in the fest line-up — “Up” by Pete Docter, which features in the Venice Pixar program, and “The Hole” by Joe Dante, which has its world premiere.
The other candidates for the Persol 3-D award are “Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3-D” by Eric Brevig, “Monsters vs. Aliens” by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, “My Bloody Valentine” by Patrick Lussier, “Battle for Terra” by Aristomenis Tsirbas, “Coraline” by Henry Selick, “Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience” by Bruce Hendricks and “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” by Carlos Saldanha.
In addition, this year’s lineup will feature 3-D pics by local helmers David Zamagni (“Daimon”) and Nadia Ranocchi (“Cock-Crow”) in the new Orizzonti 3-D section.
Ranocchi will also serve on the 3-D jury with U.S. film critics Scott Foundas and Dave Kehr.
In related news, the fest announced that Russian helmer and screenwriter Sergei Bodrov will round out the international jury. He joins jury chairman Ang Lee, Dante, Sandrine Bonnaire, Liliana Cavani, Anurag Kashyap and Luciano Ligabue
Fest runs Sept. 2-12.
