    Lensing of U.S. productions Down Under has hit a dry spell, with not one big-budget Hollywood feature shot in Oz in the past 12 months – the first yearlong lapse in nearly 20 years. The drought was highlighted in the annual Screen Australia Drama Production Survey, which showed foreign production in Australia had plunged from A$251 million ($227 million) last year to just $20 million in 2008-09.

  • Canadian b’casters take carriage fight public

    Rarely has Canadian industry negotiations been fought out with such a public war of words. Canadian broadcasters, looking to get domestic cable and satellite TV operators to compensate them for local TV station signals, in recent weeks turned to full-page newspaper ads, TV commercials and even Facebook and Twitter to get Canadians to back their “Local TV Matters” campaign. Halifax musician Dave Carroll even produced a YouTube video for the broadcasters, with lyrics that include “cable bills are flying higher than a kite, soon they’ll get ’em high enough to charge us for space flight.”

  • Chicago studio construction underway

    Construction began earlier this week to convert the historic Ryerson steel property on Chicago’s Near Southwest side into one of the largest state-of-the-art film and TV production studios outside of Hollywood. A recently approved $5 million state grant sealed the reported $18 million purchase of the 48.5 acre property by Cinespace founder Nick Mirkopoulos, whose 20-year-old family-owned business operates three successful studio facilities in the Toronto area.
