  • Digital cinema to be debated at Cannes

    Digital cinema comes under the spotlight of the European Audio Visual Observatory in a Cannes Film Festival workshop next month open free of charge to all market participants. The critical debate on the cost of funding the digitizaton of cinemas throughout Europe will be discussed by industry analysts in “Digital Cinema Tango! Getting the right rythym for the digitization of European cinemas.” The afternoon conference — at the Salle Bunuel in the Palais des Festivals on May 16 — will concentrate on how digitization will impact all industry players, not only exhibitors and cinema operators.

  • Ad buyers excited about Conan at TBS

    The more the merrier. That was the reaction of TV buyers last week to the news that Conan O’Brien is headed to TBS in the fall to begin a new chapter in his late-night talk show career. Buyers said he’ll be one more option they can use to play sellers against one another during ad sales negotiations. And the fact that O’Brien in the past has drawn a younger audience compared with his competitors Jay Leno on NBC and David Letterman on CBS — a definite plus among most advertisers — makes the O’Brien bargaining chip that much stronger, they said.

    PARIS — An international lineup of all-male auteurs will battle France’s filmmaking superstars on their home turf when the 63rd Festival de Cannes kicks off May 12.   • Weinsteins to take back Miramax

    It looks as if the Weinsteins have managed to fashion a winning bid in the Miramax auction and will take back operating control of the company they founded in 1979 and sold to Disney for $80 million in 1993. Running the process internally, the Burbank studio for months has been soliciting offers for the recently shut specialty-film unit and its 611-title library.
