Sundance Grand Jury Winner ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ to Hit Theaters June 29

Fox Searchlight has announced that it will give Beasts of the Southern Wild a limited platform release beginning June 29. Behn Zeitlin’s debut feature won the narrative grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

Written by Zeitlin and Lucy Alibar, Beasts follows a six-year-old girl in a poor southern Louisiana bayou as she struggles to survive with her father south of the levees as the ice caps melt and the seas rise. Michael Gottwald, Dan Janvey and Josh Penn produced the project, which also won a cinematography award at Sundance.

Searchlight purchased U.S. rights to the gritty drama during the festival for nearly $1 million.

Magnolia Pictures will open its specialty release Take This Waltz, a drama from writer-director Sarah Polley, the weekend of June 29, as well.
