3DIMP Secures Worldwide Theatrical and Television Rights to “Phoenix: Life of Norman Bethune”

3D International Media Partners has announced an agreement with McGill-Queen’s University Press for the worldwide theatrical and television rights for the book, Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune. The two companies held a ceremony at the Boulevard Club in Toronto, attended by Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Mr. Michael Chan, Chinese Consul General (Toronto) Mr. Li Fang, and other distinguished guests.

Dr. Bethune was honored as a “Canadian of national historic significance” in 1972 in Canada. The Norman Bethune story is a remarkable journey of personal achievement and liberation. Bethune is likely the most well-known Canadian doctor in modern Canadian history, but the recognition of his medical contributions came slowly in his native Canada years after his death. In China, however, Bethune was quickly embraced, and so were his accomplishments. He was immortalized by Mao Zedong when he said
the following about Bethune: “We must all learn the spirit of absolute selflessness from him. With this spirit everyone can be
very useful to the people. A man’s ability may be great or small, but if he has this spirit, he is already noble-minded and pure, a man of moral integrity and above vulgar interests, a man who is of value to the people.”

Recently, Dr. Bethune was awarded as the top ONE international friends selected by Internet users for “making exceptional contributions to the country in the past 100 years”, with 4.69 million votes by Chinese Internet users.

Along with 3DIMP’s partners at McGill-Queen’s University Press and our partners in China, today’s agreement marks our journey into bringing Dr. Norman Bethune’s incredible life to the 3D cinematic experience.

“Ontario has an international reputation as a leader in quality film and television production,” said Hon.

Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport. “The partnership between 3DIMP and McGillQueen’s University Press will bring Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune to the big screen in a celebration of a cultural icon, cutting-edge technology and creativity.”

“We believe this project will highlight and profile not only the works of this great humanitarian but also demonstrate the emergence of Canada and China as powerhouses in the growth of 3D technologies and content…” says William (Bill) White, Partner with 3D International Media Partners. ”China continues to lead the way globally in the consumption and adaptation of 3D, and with the Dr. Bethune being one of the most revered foreigners in Chinese history, his story is the obvious first choice for a 3D coproduction”.

Executive Director of McGill-Queen’s University Press, Philip Cercone concurs, “McGill-Queen’s University Press looks forward to an industrious and rewarding partnership with 3DIMP. In partnership with them we are pleased to work towards further disseminating the important work of our authors, 3D International Media Partners Inc.

Roderick Stewart and Sharon Stewart, who shine a much needed spotlight on Dr. Norman Bethune, one of Canada’s most illustrious historical figures.”

3DIMP will co-produce this film with a Chinese co-producing partner, based on the book “Phoenix: The Life of Norman Bethune”. This masterful biography was listed as one of the best non-fiction books of the year by the Toronto Globe and Mail, short-listed for the Canada Prize 2012, and it is going to be translated into Chinese and published by the China Youth Publishing House (Beijing) in 2014, the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The film is also slated for a Fall 2014 release to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of Dr. Bethune’s death. “It has also been my hope that a feature film could be made on Bethune based on Sharon’s and my work. Now that dream too seems poised on the edge of realization,” says the author Roderick Stewart, who have written five books on Bethune in the past 40 years.
