Oscars 2014 moves to March to avoid Winter Olympics

Next year’s Oscars will be held a week later than originally planned to avoid clashing with the Winter Olympics in Russia, it has been announced.

The 2014 scheduling, 2 March, will push the world’s most famous film awards ceremony from its usual late February slot into the following month. This year’s event was held on 24 February, with controversial host Seth MacFarlane in charge of proceedings.

According to a report in the not-always-reliable US supermarket tabloid, the National Enquirer, the 2014 ceremony could see an even more populist host taking over after MacFarlane’s hugely divisive stint garnered the ceremony’s best ratings in three years. The gossip title is reporting that Justin Timberlake is being lined up to oversee proceedings next year.

“The Oscar honchos are in discussions with Mr SexyBack already,” a source told the magazine. “Getting Justin to host would now be a huge coup for the Oscars. He’d been considered before, but they always thought he was too young and not seasoned enough. Now, he’s the frontrunner for the job after showing he knows how to sing, dance, host, and improvise on the spot.”

The pop star-turned-actor has forged a reputation as an affable screen presence in critically acclaimed films such as the Oscar-winning The Social Network and more lowbrow comedies such as Bad Teacher in the past half-decade. He recently released his first album in seven years, the well-received The 20/20 Experience. So far, no one from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which organises the Oscars, has commented publicly on the rumour.
