CanWest, CTV shop at L.A. Screenings

CanWest Global and CTV have added CBS Studios Intl. programs to their shopping bag at the L.A. Screenings.

It was a busy weekend for CanWest Global, which has bought many series from CBS Studios Intl. (formerly CBS Paramount) in the past. After picking up “Glee,” “The Cleveland Show” and “Sons of Tucson” at Fox on Friday, the conglom purchased “Melrose Place,” “NCIS: Los Angeles” and “The Good Wife” shortly after viewing the skeins on the Paramount lot.

Both “Melrose Place” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” have plenty of build-in audience awareness. “Melrose Place” is a reboot of the original Aaron Spelling series and “NCIS,” which has been a steady performer for CBS in the U.S. and travels well around the world, will launch a L.A.-based spinoff with LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell in the leads.

“The Good Wife,” about the spouse of a scandalized politician who returns to practicing law, stars Julianna Margulies.

CBS Studios Intl. also sold “The Beautiful Life,” starring Mischa Barton, to CTV, which bought hot drama “Flash Forward” from Disney on Saturday. One studio insider familiar with Canadian sales said, “The folks at CTV are really clever operators. If they see a program they want, they’ll invest.”

Both “Melrose Place” and and “The Beautiful Life” will air on the CW in the fall. “The Good Life” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” will be on the Eye.
