Alberta plans studio in Calgary

TORONTO — The Alberta government is set to unveils plans for a film studio in Calgary to woo Hollywood producers.

“All indicators are in place that the province needs and supports a Calgary studio. It’s certainly an initiative that has a lot of momentum,” Alberta film commissioner Jeff Brinton said Wednesday.

Rural Alberta has long played host Hollywood Western shoots such as “Brokeback Mountain” and last year’s Brad Pitt starrer “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.”

The government agency Calgary Economic Development recently released a discussion paper that calls for a purpose-built film studio in Calgary comprising three sound stages, likely one 15,000 square feet and two at 7,000 square feet each.

The Alberta government has also approached Comweb Group, Canada’s largest production equipment supplier, to run the Calgary studio.

“Calgary Economic Development wants us to be involved in the Calgary film studio project, to help them build and manage the building,” Comweb CEO Paul Bronfman, who recently acquired half a stake in the new Toronto studio FilmPort, said.
