Canada, UK to collaborate on TV scripts

TORONTO – International broadcasters CanWest Broadcasting and the BBC unveiled plans Sept. 6 for an incubator that will see Canadian and British scriptwriters collaborate on potential TV co-productions.

The Canada-UK script incubation program, launched at the Toronto International Film Festival, will be based out of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and will hothouse scripts for potential exploitation by Canadian and British TV producers.

BBC will be joined in the incubator by BBC Worldwide, which earlier this year took a minority stake in Canadian producer Temple Street Productions to allow the British partner to get its formats into Canada and Temple Street to extend its international reach.

As part of the incubator program, the CFC will provide six TV drama writers, three each from Canada and Britain, with mentors to develop dual passport TV series that share project risk and financing.

Julie Gardner, head of drama at BBC Wales, said the CFC program will enable the British broadcaster to discover new talent to work with Canadian partners.
