E1 tackling Stephen King’s ‘Colorado Kid’

TORONTO — Universal Networks International has signed a co-financing/acquisition deal with indie studio E1 Entertainment for “Haven,” the 13-part suspense TV series based on a Stephen King novella.

In a deal to be unveiled Tuesday at MIPCOM, Toronto-based E1 Entertainment will produce the small-screen adaptation of King’s 2005 novella “The Colorado Kid” along with “The Dead Zone” executive producers Piller/Segan/Shepherd, and handle the worldwide distribution of the one-hour series.

And Universal Networks International, NBC Universal’s global channel division, will co-finance the drama and acquire the exclusive pay TV broadcast rights for the world, excluding Canada, U.S. and Scandinavia.

Production on “Haven” is set to start early next year ahead of a planned fall 2010 airdate.

The drama will portray a small Maine town where the cursed attempt to lead normal lives as FBI agent Audrey Parker investigates supernatural forces that threaten to unravel the many mysteries of Haven.

Universal Networks International, which is headed up by former Canadian TV exec Roma Khanna, is set to grow to about 100 channels within two years.

Jumping on board “Haven” represents Universal Networks International’s first major deal for original and first-run content.

“This tremendous project signals our investment in more top quality content for our newly revitalized channel portfolio in our drive to deliver an enhanced range of high profile, first-run content offerings for our affiliates and great entertainment for our viewers around the world,” Khanna, president of Universal Networks International and digital initiatives, said.

Scott Shepherd will show run “Haven,” with partners and executive producers Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller, and E1 Entertainment’s John Morayniss and Noreen Halpern.

The “Haven” pilot was written by Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, who also share executive producer credits.

Adam Fratto will serve as co-executive producer.

Besides “Haven,” E1 Entertainment is producing “Hung” for HBO, “The Bridge” for CBS and CTV and “Copper” for ABC and Canwest.
