CBC relaunches news network

The Canuck pubcaster has relaunched its all-news cable channel Newsworld as CBC News Network or CBC NN, a CNN-like network that will offer more breaking news than in the previous format.

During the day, there will be more live coverage than there was on Newsworld, with daytime programming going under the banner CBC News Now.

Evening programming will be built around shows with high-profile anchors, tearing a page from the CNN rulebook.

The marquee evening show will be “Connect,” hosted by longtime CBC reporter and anchor Mark Kelley. As the show’s name suggests, it will be big on interactivity, using Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and Skype to connect viewers with Kelley and appeal to a younger demographic.

CBC is revamping its all-news net at the same time that its main network has sustained major budget and staff cuts. In part, the focus on the news web is due to the fact that cable channels in Canada tend to be strong cash-flow generators, while general-interest webs are finding it tough to turn a profit.

In addition to the efforts at CBC NN, pubcaster’s main network will introduce local latenight newscasts in major markets.

“The people we surveyed said they want a more transparent and open CBC, so we’re bringing the news closer to our audiences in our presentation and by allowing audiences access to the newsgathering process,” said CBC News general manager Jennifer McGuire.
