    In what is shaping up to be the biggest change in first-run syndication in two decades, Oprah Winfrey will end her daily talk show Sept. 9, 2011, after 25 years on the air. This is anything but a retirement. Winfrey will shift her efforts to OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, which she owns with Discovery Communications. The cable network expects to bow at the end of next year.

    Cable companies have gained so much power they have become a threat to Canadian broadcasting, and the national telecommunications regulator is mostly to blame, says Canada’s second-largest private broadcaster. Canwest Global Corp. president Leonard Asper blamed the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission for setting ground rules that have impoverished broadcasters and put cable firms in the penthouse. “Broadcasting is a regulated business. Once you decide to regulate, it should be fair regulation,” he chided the CRTC during hearings on the future of broadcasting Wednesday.

    Cookie Jar Entertainment has opened a satellite office in South Korea, with CJ Lee as vp of distribution. Toronto-based Cookie Jar hired Lee, most recently managing director and consultant for animation producer GIMC, to handle TV sales and develop licensing programs in South Korea. Lee will also focus on production and development opportunities in the Asian market as he reports to Hideki Kunugiyama, managing director of Cookie Jar’s Tokyo-based CPLG Asia/Pacific operation.

    As we wrap up a year where the economic sky fell in, special features writer Rea Kelly explores the business model at Toronto Ad Agency RBW, a ‘new mainstream’ ad agency, to try and discover what makes them successful. Gavin Barrett is the Creative Director at RBW, located in Toronto’s east end. He’s wearing a tweed blazer, jeans, and an “I love India” t-shirt. Although Rao, Barrett & Welsh are small you may not have heard of them, they’re kicking butt, Canadian-style.
