WGAE woos new media

Touting its focus on organizing new media work, the Writers Guild of America East more than tripled its roster of digital media signatories last year to more than 30 companies.

The WGA East, in an announcement Monday, said it signed 22 companies in 2009. It also said that 30 writers have become guild members as a result of digital media work.

“The business models, distribution structures, and creative opportunities in digital media are still being developed,” said WGA East exec director Lowell Peterson. “The fundamental goal of the Writers Guild 2.0 initiative is to ensure that creators are at the table as decisions are made about these basic issues. The enormous potential of digital media won’t mean much if writers and other creators can’t make a living, or if they must cede creative control.”

Signatories announced during the fourth quarter include animated web series “9am Meeting”; production company AGBK; animated web series “The Bear, the Cloud and God”; musical web series “The Battery’s Down”; animated web series “Confirmed Bachelors”; web series “Alex Bloom and Ben Zelevansky”; web series “Downsized”; live action web series “Duder”; live action title “Gavin Lance”; production company Guy and Cut Films; production company Jamtown Films; production company Respect Films; and web series “Undead New York.”
