Frustrated with the booming commercial volume during your favorite shows?

You’re not the only one.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday to force television stations and cable companies to keep the volume of commercials the same as the shows they interrupt, according to the Associated Press.

The House passed similar legislation, which will be reconciled when Congress reconvenes in Washington, DC following the Nov. 2 elections.

The Federal Communication Commission has been receiving complaints about volume since TV’s inception, but ruled in 1984 that it would be impossible to control the sound because it comes from so many different sources: local businesses, syndicators, networks, affiliates.

An industry organization recently released guidelines on keeping audio uniform without affecting the artistic intent of the commercials, the AP reports.
