CBC Big Winner at Gemini Awards in Toronto

TORONTO — Geminis host CBC was the big winner Tuesday on the first night of Canada’s TV awards.

The pubcaster carted away two Geminis for perennial winner the fifth estate – best news direction for Oleh Rumak and Linden MacIntyre winning for best information program writing.

On the news front, CBC’s Mark Kelley won for best news information series host, CBC News The National earned top honors for best news information segment, while CBC News: Marketplace won for best news information series and CBC News: The New Governor General came tops in the best news special event coverage competition.

With rival CTV not entering its news programming in the Geminis competition, an rare outlier Tuesday night was Global Television’s Dawna Friesen winning for best newscaster.

The CBC riches continued with the CBC The National’s Adrienne Arsenault triumphing for best breaking news reportage for her Pakistan floods coverage, and CBC News: Here & Now won for best breaking news coverage of Hurricane Igor.

Other multiple winners: Cineflix’s Nazi Hunters doc series won for best history documentary and best doc direction for P.J. Naworynski, while the National Geographic Channel’s Code Breakers series won Geminis for best doc photography and best science doc.

The CBC also dominated the sports categories, with the pubcaster’s Hockey Night in Canada winning for best live sporting event, and Elliote Friedman earning the Gemini for best sports reporting.

Canada’s TV awards continue Wednesday night with winners in the drama, youth, comedy and variety categories, ahead of the highest-profile Geminis handed out on Sept.7 during a live telecast on the CBC.
