$90 million dream comes true for Motion Picture and Television Fund

The creative trio behind DreamWorks SKG is donating $90 million to the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) Campaign. Director Steven Spielberg, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg and music executive David Geffen have pledged $30 million each to one of Hollywood’s oldest charities. The money will go toward a $350 million campaign announced earlier this year to build the endowment and support the Fund’s charitable operations.

“Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen are each legendary for their philanthropy and individually have made immeasurable impact on charities and organizations ranging from arts and culture, health care, education, film preservation and social services in our Hollywood community and around the nation,” said George Clooney, MPTF board member and co-chair of the campaign. “And now for them to make this unified commitment to MPTF only adds to that incredible record of generosity.”

Established more than 90 years ago to provide financial assistance and services to entertainment industry members in need, MPTF has struggled financially in recent years. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, the charity raised hackles in January 2009 when it announced plans to shut down a nursing home for retired entertainment industry workers. Fund execs since took cost-cutting measures and made fundraising efforts to readmit patients and keep the home open on a smaller scale.
Katzenberg, chairman of the MPTF Foundation, indicated that the MPTF Campaign was initiated by the board to make sure that funding for the charitable programs and services it offers would be secure in the future.

“It becomes very personal when someone you know or have worked with is cared for at ‘the Home’ or a crew member is helped financially by MPTF,” said Spielberg. “The mission ‘we take care of our own’ is suddenly very real and tangible, and so this new donation is an extension of what we have been doing for a number of years to support that mission.”

Other high-profile donations to the campaign have included $30 million from executive Barry Diller and his fashion designer wife Diane von Furstenberg; $30 million from financier Steve Bing; $20 million from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.; and $20 million from Kirk and Anne Douglas.
