New Vancouver film venues coming soon

A couple of bits of movie-theatre news, involving renovation work of varying degrees.

Renos started last January at the former CN Imax theatre at Canada Place, which is being refitted to accommodate a new $16 million attraction, an immersive 30-minute film called Flyover Canada. Groups of up to 60 guests at at a time will strap in and be lifted in front of a 20-metre curved screen, where they will bounce and tilt along with the flight depicted in the movie.

The attraction will also involve blasts of wind, smells and mist. It doesn’t open until next spring, but you can check out a teaser trailer.

Meanwhile, at a smaller venue across town, the proprietors of the now-shuttered Denman Cinema have moved operations to the former Raja Theatre on Kingsway near Joyce.

The husband and wife team of Mike and Naz Jamshedian say the theatre will be home to independent films and cultural documentaries. They’re holding an online competition to rename the theatre.

The Jamshedians are renovating their new venue after signing a five-year lease, and the theatre opens Nov. 13 with the Vancouver premiere of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, a subtitled romance about an ex-army man (Shah Rukh Khan), leading a double life in London, who must choose between his wife and muse.

The movie is also the last feature directed by Yash Chopra, the Indian film mogul who died last month.
