Banff Mountain Film Fest features astounding adventuring films over three nights at the Rio

There are two kinds of people who go to see the films at the Banff Mountain Film Festival world tour – those who watch the astonishing accounts of rock climbing, snowboarding, alpine skiing, whitewater rafting and the like and say to themselves, “Man, would I like to be there”; and those who watch the same films and say to themselves, “Are these people insane?”

The Banff Fest heads to Santa Cruz for a three-day engagement at the Rio Theatre and it’s a near certainty that minds will be blown. For the 37th year, the Canadian film festival has packaged some of its most astounding and compelling films and sent them out on the road to capture the attention of would-be adventurers and armchair athletes everywhere.

Adventuring films will be screened Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Rio, different films each night. They include amazing scenes of dexterity on mountain bikes and along rock faces, spelunking in the lost caves of the Grand Canyon, skiing along the remote sheer faces of Alaska’s Denali National Park. There are tales of human endurance that will have you thankful for the warm theater seat, and stories of inspiration from people who have accomplished things that most of us wouldn’t dare to try in their shoes, such as the story of three amputees who attempt to climb a daunting rock face. There are stories of Afghans embracing the decidedly non-Afghan sport of skiing, of African-Americans’ re-connection with the nation’s national parks and men stalking the great sport of curling on frozen lakes.
The festival packages begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday and Saturday shows are sold out as of press time. Tickets still available for Sunday. Details: www.santacruztickets.com.
