    2014 was a year when Hollywood film and TV production locally made a comeback, the CBC got crushed by a sex scandal after already being damaged by escalating job and programming cuts, and U.S. programming suppliers took fright as Canada moved headlong toward cable unbundling. The sudden collapse of the value of the Canadian dollar against the American greenback in 2014 steered Los Angeles producers to Toronto and Vancouver for extra budgetary savings while making movies and TV shows.

    Sony is closing all 14 of its stores in Canada over the next six to eight weeks, the company announced in a statement today. Approximately 90 jobs will be affected, a spokesman for Sony Canada told CBC News. Sony Canada is not saying why the stores are being closed.

    It’ll be a fight to the finish. Boyhood, Birdman, and The Imitation Game all came out of this morning’s Oscar nominations looking strong, in an echo of last year’s three-movie race to best picture. All three of these best picture nominees saw their directors, screenplays, and two of their actors nominated for top prizes.
