NBCUniversal Signs TV, Film Supply Deal With Canadian Streamer Shomi
Tuesday April 14th 2015Canadian streamer Shomi has struck a licensing agreement with NBCUniversal that gives it the exclusive SVOD rights to all episodes of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Parenthood, 12 Monkeys, Dig, Defiance and Royal Pains.
Under the pact, Shomi also will get previous episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, Dominion, Satisfaction and Warehouse 13 for streaming by Canadian binge-watchers on an exclusive basis. Shomi, launched in late 2014 by cable giants Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications, did earlier licensing deals with Disney/ABC, Warner Bros. 20th Century Fox and Starz Digital Media.
Shomi, like rival Canadian SVOD CraveTV, is aiming to fend off stiff competition from Netflix Canada. The new NBCUniversal deal also gives Shomi the non-exclusive streaming rights to Friday Night Lights, Kings, Alphas, Amazing Stories, Covert Affairs, Eureka, Caprica, Quantum Leap, Battlestar Galactica, and Boo!
The catalog deal also includes more than 375 movies from NBCUniversal. “Canadian subscribers will be well served by Shomi’s commitment to some of NBCU’s finest and most popular content,” Ron Suter, executive vp NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution, Canada said Friday in a statement.
Netflix, which launched in Canada in late 2010, is competing against Shomi and CraveTV as consumers here increasingly view film and TV series online.
