Rossif Sutherland’s ‘River’ Wins Big at Whistler Film Festival
Monday December 07th 2015The Rossif Sutherland-starrer River, the first North American film shot in Laos, won the top jury prize on Sunday at this year’s Whistler Film Festival in British Columbia.
Director Jamie M. Dagg’s first-timer about an American voluntary doctor in Laos won the Borsos Competition for best Canadian feature film. River also received the best screenplay trophy in Whistler, while Dagg won for best Borsos director.
The film beat out another Borsos contender, Jon Cassar’s Forsaken, a father-son Western toplined by Donald Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland. Paul Savoie, star of The Diary of an Old Man, took home best performance honors in a Borsos competition title.
Whistler’s World Documentary Award went to Hui Wang’s Last Harvest, a China-Canada co-production, while the best cinematography prize went to lenser Dylan Macleod for his work on Ingrid Veninger’s He Hated Pigeons.
In all, 89 films screened at Whistler over its Dec. 2-6 run.
